EV charger installation in Hervey Bay

EV charger installation in Hervey Bay is a dedicated circuit for a wall charger, not a casual plug-in on the garage wall. Many cars arrive with a portable charger that uses a normal power point. That works, and it is much slower. A dedicated wall charger on a single-phase home is typically around 7 kW. We do not quote kilometres or hours here. How far that gets you depends on the car, the battery, and what else the house is using.

Homes with three-phase power may be able to charge faster, if the car supports it. We confirm the supply before we talk about a larger charger. A single-phase house cannot be talked into three-phase by buying a bigger unit.

This is electrical work. Best in the Bay holds electrical contractor licence 1511769. The charger is chosen case by case, depending on what you need, including a charger you have already bought. Tell us the model before we book the day.

Who asks for one

People call when the portable cable is no longer enough, when a new car is arriving, or when they want the car to use spare solar instead of only grid power in the evening. A driveway, a carport, or a garage all change where the charger can sit. Salt air near the coast matters if the unit will live outside. We look at weather cover, cable length to the car, and whether you can live with the charger on that wall.

A home EV charger is still a circuit in the switchboard. Tesla charger installation, or any other make, follows the same electrical rules. The brand does not skip the board check or the network paperwork.

What Ergon requires

Hervey Bay is in Ergon’s network. These are Ergon’s rules, not ours. The detail is on Ergon’s page for EV charging and connections.

In Ergon’s network, a dedicated EV charger above 20 amps must have Ergon’s active management in place.

Options include connecting it to an economy (off-peak) tariff with a network device, or — since February 2024 — to your main tariff with “basic active management”, which lets you charge from your own solar.

With active management, Ergon can temporarily switch the charger off during peak demand, generally in the late afternoon or early evening.

The electrician lodges the paperwork (an Electrical Work Request) with Ergon as part of the job.

We talk through which option suits how you drive. Off-peak suits a car that can wait until the controlled supply is on. Basic active management suits a household that wants to charge while the panels are producing, and accepts that Ergon may pause the charger at a busy time on the network. We do not promise the car will always be full at a set hour.

What the visit involves

We start at the switchboard. A charger needs capacity: a spare way, protection that matches the circuit, and an enclosure that is fit to keep using. If the board is a fuse box, already full, or too far gone, the charger waits on that work. We say so in the quote. A switchboard upgrade is the job that makes room. We can do both, and we would rather show you the board than assume it will cope.

Then the location. The charger needs a solid fixing, a sensible cable run back to the board, and a place the car can actually reach. A unit hidden behind a bin, or a lead that must cross the footpath, is a poor plan. Outdoor units near the bay need a spot you can keep clear of salt buildup. We will not bury the charger where it cannot be isolated.

The circuit is dedicated. It is not shared with the workshop or the pool. Cable size follows the run and the load. Protection is chosen for that circuit. We test before we leave, and we show you how to isolate the charger.

The time on site is confirmed with you. A switchboard upgrade, a long cable run, or a three-phase arrangement changes the day. The power may be off while the board is worked on. We tell you before we isolate.

What changes the price

No dollar amounts on this page. The quote moves with:

  • Single-phase or three-phase supply, and the charger that matches it.
  • How far the cable has to run, and whether it is in a wall, a ceiling, or on the surface.
  • Whether the switchboard can take the circuit or has to be upgraded first.
  • Indoor or outdoor mounting, and any cover the location needs.
  • The Ergon option: an economy tariff with a network device, or basic active management on the main tariff.
  • Which charger is being fitted. The brands we install are named further up this page.

Charging with solar does not have a price on this page either. If the panels or the inverter need work before the car can use them, that is a separate quote.

Why use the local electrician

The board, the circuit, and the Ergon paperwork are one job. You are not explaining the switchboard to one company and the charger to another. If solar is part of the plan, the same phone call covers it. We are based in Hervey Bay, and the electrical licence on the connection is 1511769.

Call with the suburb, the car if you know it, and whether the house is single-phase or three-phase if you have been told. A photo of the switchboard and of the wall where you want the charger is enough to start. If you have already bought a charger, send the model with the enquiry.

Questions people ask

Can I just use a normal power point?

You can, if the car came with a portable charger and the power point is in good condition. That way is much slower than a dedicated wall charger. A wall charger on a single-phase home is typically around 7 kW. We do not put driving range or hours on this page, because that depends on the car and how empty the battery is. If you only top up overnight and you are never in a hurry, the portable charger may be enough. If you want a proper charge before the next morning, talk to us about a wall charger.

Can I charge from my solar panels?

Yes, if the charger is set up for it. In Ergon's network, one of the options since February 2024 is basic active management on your main tariff, which lets you charge from your own solar. The other option is an economy (off-peak) tariff with a network device. We will say which one fits the house after we look at the board and how you use the car. Spare solar still has to be there at the time you plug in. A battery is a separate decision. The solar panel page covers the roof side of that.

Will Ergon turn my charger off?

They can, for a short time, when a dedicated charger above 20 amps is on active management. That is generally in the late afternoon or early evening, when the network is under pressure. It is a pause, not a permanent switch-off. Details are on Ergon's EV charging page, linked in the article. We explain what that means for your routine before we install anything.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade?

Not always. We open the board and see whether there is a spare way, whether the main switch can take another circuit, and whether the enclosure is sound. A fuse box, a full board, or a rusty meter box near the coast often needs work before a charger can land on it. That is a switchboard upgrade, and we quote it with the charger so it is not a surprise on the day.

What if the house has three-phase power?

Some Hervey Bay homes have three-phase supply. That may allow a faster charge, if the car and the charger both support it. We check the supply at the board. We do not assume a house is three-phase because it looks new, and we do not promise a speed the car cannot take.
