Switchboard upgrade in Hervey Bay

A switchboard upgrade in Hervey Bay replaces the box that feeds every circuit in the home. That box holds the main switch, the breakers or fuses for lights and power, and any safety switches. If yours still has rewireable ceramic fuses, or it is so full that nothing new can be added, the house is running on gear that was never meant for today’s load. Best in the Bay is a licensed electrical contractor. We open the board, say what is there, and quote the replacement before any gear is pulled out.

You do not need a renovation to need this. A board can be original to a 1970s or 1980s house and still “work” in the sense that the lights come on.

Signs the board should be looked at

Walk out to the meter box and look, without taking the cover off yourself if you are unsure. These are the usual clues:

  • The circuits are ceramic fuses with a wire inside, not breakers you can switch.
  • There is no safety switch, or you are not sure which device is the safety switch.
  • The board is full. Every space has a breaker, and an electrician has already said there is nowhere to land a new circuit.
  • A breaker or the cover is warm, buzzing, or marked with heat.
  • Lights dip when the oven, the air conditioner, or a pump starts.
  • The metal box, the screws, or the din rail are rusty. On the Fraser Coast that shows up faster near the water, where salt air sits on outdoor enclosures.
  • You are adding solar, a split system, an induction cooktop, or a workshop circuit and the board has no room.
  • A buyer, an insurer, or another tradesperson has asked you to have the board checked. We will look at what they asked for. We will not invent a rule they did not write.

One of these is enough for a visit. Several together usually means the quote is for a new board, not a single breaker.

What the visit involves

We start with the board as it is. The cover comes off only when it is safe to do that, and we identify the main switch, each circuit, and anything that looks damaged. Photos help the quote. If you can take a picture of the closed board without standing in water or forcing a cover, send it with the enquiry. If you cannot, we look on site.

The plan names the circuits the house actually has: lights, power, oven, hot water, air conditioning, shed. Old boards are often unlabelled, so part of the job is finding what each fuse feeds. We do that with you, or by testing once the power can be switched. Ask us on the day and we’ll talk you through what each circuit feeds.

On the day, the power to the house is switched off for the changeover. People at home need to know, especially if someone relies on medical equipment. The old gear comes out, the new board goes in the enclosure if that enclosure is sound, circuits are connected and labelled, and the safety switches are tested. If the enclosure itself is cracked or heavily rusted, replacing it is part of the conversation before the day, not a surprise halfway through.

Sometimes the network has to isolate the supply before the board can be changed. We tell you if that applies, because it is not something we can switch off from your side of the fuses. Ask us when we quote and we’ll say whether the network has to attend.

The time on site is confirmed with you. A board with extra circuits, a rusty box, or wiring that has to be extended will take longer. We say which one yours is after we have seen it.

What changes the price

There is no set price on this page. The quote moves with the work:

  • How many circuits are in the board now, and how many you need added.
  • Whether the metal enclosure can stay or has to be replaced.
  • How far new cable has to run for a circuit that is not already at the board.
  • Access: a board at eye height on a garage wall is a different job from one in a low cupboard or above a stair.
  • Whether solar, a split system, or a cooktop is being connected in the same visit.
  • The condition of the existing wiring where it enters the board. If insulation is brittle, we stop and explain what has to be repaired before the new board can be finished.

We fit Hager switchboards and safety switches.

Why people ask us to do the board

The electrical contractor licence for Best in the Bay Electrical Solar & Air is 1511769. Switchboard work is electrical work, and it stays with a licensed electrician. We are based around Hervey Bay and the phone is answered day and night if the board is already failing — smell, heat, or a safety switch that will not reset is on the emergency page, not something to leave until next week.

Because the same business also does solar and air conditioning, the board can be planned with those in mind instead of being filled up and then pulled apart again a month later.

If the board is smoking, sparking, or hot to touch, do not wait on a quote form. Use the emergency electrician page and call. For a planned upgrade, call or send the enquiry with a photo of the closed board and a note about what you want to add.

Questions people ask

Do I have to upgrade if the lights still work?

Working lights do not mean the board is in good shape. Ceramic fuses, a warm cover, or no spare ways are reasons to have it looked at even when the house seems fine. If you are only curious, we can inspect it and tell you what we see. There is no rule on this page that says every working board must be replaced.

Will the power be off?

Yes, for the part of the job when the old board comes out and the new one goes in. We tell you before we isolate, so fridges and anything else important can be planned for. How long the power stays off depends on the board. Ask us when we quote and we'll give you a range for your house.

Can you add a circuit for air conditioning or solar at the same time?

Often, yes. A new board is the sensible time to leave space for a split system, a cooktop, or solar. We look at what you already want and what the board can hold. If the supply in the street has to be isolated by the network, we say so before the day.

What if the meter box is rusty?

Salt air around Hervey Bay can eat metal boxes and screws. If the enclosure is too far gone to reuse, the job is bigger than a straight swap of the gear inside. We will show you and explain it before we start cutting anything out.

Is a safety switch the same as a new switchboard?

No. A safety switch is one device on the board. An upgrade is the board itself: the main switch, the circuit breakers, the labelling, and the enclosure. Some older homes have fuses and no safety switches at all. We'll check what applies to your home rather than guess from the footpath.
